Ascent Trip ReportDAY #25 --- HOT SPRINGS, NC ---
Yesterday's hike on the AT, over the open grass summits of snowbird and max patch, was simply superb, as were the four huge wild turkeys I saw after brown gap. They kept crossing the AT, back and forth, in front of me, for abt 5 min, before they went their way.
Over 4 peaks on route (off-trail to Lamb Knob), nice enjoyable day.
15h30 - arrived hot springs NC, went to elmers sunny brook inn, a very old victorian home. My left achilles tendon started getting sore yesterday, right knee still sore. I'll stay here for 4 nights - 2 zero days, plus a sb slack-pack on sunday (the 10th), so that I can watch the last episode of the sopranos.
At this stop I will, besides the usual stuff,
- - - purchase a bunch of lighter gear in order to reduce my load (vapor trail backpack, stuff sacs, towel, cook set, wind breaker), and ship the old to Michael's place.
- - - get a hair cut at Hazel beauty salon (85 yr old bachelor) for 3$. New technology pushed her out of her old librarian job, she's been cutting hair since 1946.
- - - go to tomorrows folk festival
HOT SPRINGS, NC is my favorite AT town, a small very friendly/hospitable place, easy to get to your needs. Their Bluff Outfitters shop is as good as any, has a very knowledgeable staff.
