Ascent Trip ReportDAY #34 ---- ANOTHER UNPLANNED FALL AND THE BLOOMING RHODODENDRUNS ----
Rained most of the night - light rain, huge thunder storm and cool this AM, stayed in my bag, raining as Chris & Maria started out together.
8h45 - Light sprinkle & with poncho left shelter. Caught/passed Maria (Chris had sped ahead) on the steep climb up to Roan High Knob - 2 guys, similarly dressed, running down at a pretty good clip.
Still sprinkling & cold as I crested Roan, on way to the near-by shelter for a lunch. Maria in a bit later, she made coffee. I got really cold so I rushed to leave without Maria .... only finding out at Cavers Gap that I left my poncho back at the shelter.
Leaving my backpack behind at Carvers Gap I started out, hiking the access road to Roan High Bluff, which passes near the shelter at Roan Knob summit (at 2M) ...... luckily Nora & Rob, ATC workers that Maria and I met at the shelter, were driving down to Carvers Gap. They turned around/drove me back up/dropped me off 15 min from the shelter.
Rushing back to this access road, after getting my poncho, I tripped & fell on my face ! ! ! lucky, just a few scratches. A pick up truck drove me back down to the gap , where Rob "watching my bag" was waiting for me to return, a true "Trail Angel".
Today's trip took me over 8 peaks including a second visit via a side trail to Grassy Ridge Bald , not a difficult day, if not for the left-behind-poncho, which stressed me out.
This whole "Carvers Gap/Roan mtn/Grassy Ridge Bald area", in mid-June, is the most spectacular area on the AT, and with the number of visitors I'm not alone with this opinion. The blooming rhododendrons on these high mtns, the openness of this high garden & the hike from Carvers Gap/Jane Bald/Grassy Ridge Bald has to be experienced .... truly outstanding. Rose and I first visited here in 2001-06-12 (same time of the year), when we hiked the 3 - 6000 footers in this area.
Perhaps the most beautiful area in mid-June in all of the east.
16h45 - Overmountain shelter is an old barn at Yellow Mountain Gap, located high up on the end of the long valley - super spot with a beautifull sunset. 6 others in, besides Chris & Maria.
SOME DO DREAM - SOME DO - FEW DO BOTH
