Made our way through gate and paid $15 ($10 entry + $5 parking?) , got a map, and drove about 4 miles up Hot Springs Mountain Road and parked near the first big log pile to start our hike. Hiked up the road through beautiful scenery and then climbed Corral BM (6407 ft) on an old firebreak up the SW ridge. Found the benchmark, signed register, and came down continuing up HSMR to find spot also from the SW to climb Peak 6400 (6400 ft). Went off trail through woods to bottom of huge rock slabs which we scrambled all the way to the summit where my GPS read exactly 6400 ft though there is no benchmark or register. Went down then continued up HSMR to the lookout tower and explored the area before finding use trail to the true summit of Hot Springs Mountain (6533 ft), the highest point in San Diego County. Summit boulder required some class 3-4 moves and can be climbed from a couple different spots. Found station and 2 reference benchmarks and signed register.
Next headed down HSMR to approach to Obie BM (6264 ft). Good at first off trail through woods but then became more and more choked with vegetation especially manzanita. Very Very difficult bushwacking as we had to crawl our way through. Finally reached then end and found station Obie BM which I am sure is rarely visited due to the brutal bushwacking. Made our way back taking over 3 hours to cover total of 1.5 miles, I do not recommend this for anyone to try, we were pretty cut up all over and exhausted from the endeavor. Went down the road to the car and planned on doing Art BM but had to make it out of the reservation by 6pm and just did at 5:30. Saw a bobcat on the way back too! Click photo below.
