This is the definitive track for the off trail hike of Granite Mountain from Cool Canyon in Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Follow the wash from the parking area 0.2 miles and then take the left fork (main wash). At the 0.9 mile mark after climbing over several dry waterfalls there is a three way fork in the wash after the highest dry fall. Fork right and then right again. Climb another dry waterfall about 15 ft high and then head left straight up the ridge between the washes. Climb directly West up the ridge over many small summits. At about 4000 ft veer NW and aim for the center of the shallow saddle visible ahead at 4624 ft. Go through the saddle, descend and then climb up through the toughest section, covered with boulders, to the false summit at 5100 ft. From here follow the ridgeline NW to the summit (5633 ft) and scramble up to the large flat boulder on top which is visible from the false summit.

Be prepared because this challenging hike involves it all. Off trail navigation, scrambling, boulder hopping, bushwacking, cacti avoidance, dehydration, high winds, full sun exposure, very steep slopes (3000 ft in 2 miles), many false summits, loose footing, burned areas, wildflowers, amazing geology, and incredible views in every direction.
Station benchmark and Reference benchmarks no. 1 and no. 2 are all on the summit. The Azimuth benchmark is on a rock outcrop on the ridge 0.5 miles SSW of the summit. Awesome hike, have fun!!
