Ascent Trip ReportDrove up solo 6+ hours to Rt. 16 N. Conway / White Mountain National Forest. Listened a fire jumper from the West give a presentation at the visitors center, went back to my car, drank a Corona and went to sleep in the back of our Honda Odyssey. Woke up early, looked out the back window and saw a red tail fox looking for food in the parking lot. Got up, ate breakfast at the center, went back to the car, got my gear, came back to the center, rented hiking poles, signed in, asked about the weather and bears, and went for it. Took a lot of photos of different mushrooms and a toad. Started on the trail with overcast skies. As I went higher it became more socked in and with mist and rain. I was the only one on the trail. I passed 2 people coming off the mountain. When I came to the fork I chose Lion's Head trail. It was 3 hours of difficult climbing. As I passed tree line visibility was only about 20ft. Very difficult to see the rock pyramids. I finally made it to the top in about 4 hrs cold and wet. No view at all after all that hard work. I went into the bathroom thinking I was going to dry my clothes in the hand dryer but that did not work. I ate some food, tried to warm up and listen to what people were talking about. A ranger came around and was asking if hikers were okay and told them there was a shuttle that could take them down if they could not make it. I contemplated this but then saw a man with his 12 year old son start down so I went for it too. Just as hard and scary going down. I got scared when I saw the dark image in the fog of what I thought was a wolf but turned out to be a dog off its leash and the owner 10 steps behind. Made my way below tree line, fell twice pretty hard and was really tired. Made it down in about 3 hrs. Signed back in I think, went to my car, dried off, drank a corona to celebrate, went to the bathroom, and drove back home. Would I do it again? No doubt!
