Ascent Trip Report

The USS NIMITZ pulled into Naval Air Station Coronado Island first thing in the morning and I was racing off the O-brow by 11:15am after finishing my work. Aidan's mom and Aidan were waiting for me at the front gate and we were quickly on the 15 north headed to Palomar Mountain State Park to enjoy a picnic lunch and leisurely afternoon in the woods. After eating lunch at the picnic area just inside the park, we headed to Doane Pond for our hike!

Instead of doing this as a drive-up like most poeple do, we decided to make a nice day of it since we paid the $8 entry fee for the state park. This is a beautiful sky island climate above the chapparal below. We had a very nice day just wandering in the trees. The advertised HPS route from the group campground has 2 snags: 1) You are not supposed to park in the group sites for day use 2) The northern slopes of the peak have been burned over and lack shade. Additionally, beware of poodle bush in this area. The cleared area did make for good views of Eagle Crag though.

Making a loop of it was nice though. The benefit of the route from Doane Pond is that you get to hike a little more in the beautiful forest. The eastern leg of our route was much more scenic, staying in the clear, open forest for the majority of its length. The only downside of the route up from Doane Pond was the poison oak on both sides of the trail along the last 1/4 mile before the group site, easily avoided if you are paying attention.

This is my only day ashore for the next month until we hit SE Asia, and it was a day well spent with my son!
