Ascent Trip ReportI got barked at by a ranger at the visitor center for daring to start North Chalone so late on a day when it might get into the 90s. I smiled and nodded and asked about parking...
It wound up being the perfect time to start (about 1:00pm) because there was no one beyond the reservoir - I had the trail to myself going and coming. The "heat" was a complete non-factor; I barely noticed it.
I wound up having my headlamp, but thought I had left it in the car and went into the caves on the trail without light. There was just enough sunlight filtering through various areas to make it without any issues. Probably best to bring a flashlight.
Beautiful hike. I targeted it merely because it is the newest National Park. I hadn't hit a NP hp since Lassen in 2011 and made this the centerpiece of my short trip.
