Ascent Trip Report

For the start of this trip we got a ride share from Melbourne with Nick who was looking to go hike up Kozzy and then head off to Sydney. His plans changed a bit and he wasn't heading to Sydney anymore but he did want to go to Kozzy. We meet up at Nick's house in South Yarra at around 11:30pm. He had to drop his girlfriend off at the airport for an extremely late flight. We didn't start the 6 hour drive until 3am. We picked up a fellow travel along the way, Jim, who was just really looking for a ride east. Nick and I drove into the wee hours of the night switching off here and there. We arrived to Thredbo in the late morning. From there we got our gear together and started walking totally cracked out and sleepy.

We took the Merritt Nature Track up. At the start of the hike the weather was great and looked promising for us at the top. When we reached the Eagel's Nest and above tree-line the wind started to pick up a bit. Along the route to the summit the clouds, or fog, started to set in. We reached the summit with no view at all. It was disappointing but we were the only ones up there to enjoy the highest point in mainland Australia.

On the descent we raced back to the Eagel's Nest to catch the last ride down on the ski lift by 4:30. We camped for the night at Leather Barrel camp ground which was located 10 km west of Thredbo.

Overall: I enjoyed the hike. As for being a hard hike, it wasn't. That shouldn't take away from the wonderful setting Kosciusko is located. The Kosciusko Track, though being a high traffic area, was filled with great open areas, and flora and fauna to dazzle the eye. We didn't get to enjoy the view, we did get to enjoy the mountain to ourselves. I almost enjoyed that more. It gave us a feeling of accomplishment and a connection to the peak.
