Ascent of Gill Knob on 2013-03-29

|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Location:||USA-North Carolina|
| Elevation:||2655 ft / 809 m|
Ascent Trip ReportAccording to the spot elevations, Gill Knob is 11 feet shorter than the nearby unnamed Peak 2666 (aka Cottrell Knob Northeast). It's an important distinction because one of these ranks as a P1K--one of the 95 NC mountains with 1,000 feet of prominence. Both top out in the 2640 contour. Gill Knob has a much larger summit contour, and I think there is a chance it is at least as high as Peak 2666/Cottrell Knob NE. If you're working on the prominence list, you'll sleep better if you climb them both.
The two peaks are accessed by gated roads on opposite sides of the Durham Gap parking area at the end of the road into the Buffalo Cove gamelands. Beyond the right-side gate, a woods road leads east toward Gill Knob. Descend gradually for 0.3 miles and then take a fork to the right. This old road follows the ridge to the summit. The roundtrip hike to Gill Knob is 1.5 miles. To bag both contenders you'll walk a total of 3.6 miles.
Gill Knob is wooded, so at least in terms of views, it does not compare to Peak 2666.
Driving drections to trailhead listed under Cottrell Knob Northeast.
