Ascent Trip Report

Picked a great day to bag this Prom-State HP. It was windy and raining and nobody was in the park. I put on full wet gear and hood and set out. But it is a nice little hike if you do it right. The park is worth seeing. A lot of history about native Indians, mining iron ore from the gabrro-basalt uplift, large and diverse hard wood trees...and cool pits left over from the mining which makes some crazy steep trails meandering around. The pits all had water today with the rain.

I parked at the last parking lot in the Iron Hill County Park and then hiked past the hill and down to the interstate to get the lowest TH start I could find at EL 100 and then put the hiking stats on the backside to keep it simple. Amazing there was no gate or fence stopping me to go all the way down to the R/W swale and then start up. The mud on the embankment was a bit of a challenge but then....why not?

There are so many trails, i meandered around on many of them and even cross country hiked through the still dormant hardwoods easily as nothing had leafed out yet. I eventually found the trail up the water tower and once again no fence to stop you from going between the subdivision and the county park so you can access the HP from the county park trail system. Thus, a worthy short hike. I will return and do this again when the trees have leaves and it is not raining.

I spent an hour and covered 2.6 miles in the rain, reading the signs, and moving quickly between stops.
