Ascent Trip Report

Left campus at 5:30 for a long day of hiking with Paul Eichas, who drove up from Maryland and is trying to finish his Winter 46, and my resident Evan Bilsback. We arrived at the AMR gate at 08:00, and had a slightly slippery but uneventful trudge along Lake Road to Ausable Lake, which we reached by 09:00 with light clouds. I donned my crampons, while Evan put on his snowshoes. We began heading up the trail toward the col between Sawteeth and Gothics, which was fairly icy at first, but more snow covered the trail as we neared the col, which we reached at about 10:30. We ascended Sawteeth, encountering only one other party who were descending. We reached the summit of Sawteeth shortly after 11:00, and by this time, the skies cleared, yielding unlimited visibility that would stay for the remainder of our hike. We took some photos, and had some water and a snack and headed back down to the col. Paul switched over from micro-spikes to snowshoes when we descended back to the col. We headed up toward Gothics, and paused for some photos and more water on Pyramid, which gave a beautiful view of the Great Range, MacIntyres, and much more. We reached the summit of Gothics, and took a lot of photos of the astounding views that we had. Mount Mansfield was clearly visible, as well as Camel’s Hump and Lake Champlain. It was quite chilly, likely below zero with the wind chill, but out of the wind, it was warm in the sun. After photos and more water, we headed down the col toward the trail junction toward Armstrong, which we reached in great time. From the junction, we ascended Armstrong, and decided not to push on over Upper Wolf Jaw. The descent from Armstrong wasn’t too eventful, and we stopped for a minute at Beaver Meadow Falls before heading towards Lake Road and walking back to the gate, which we reached at 17:15, with just enough sunlight left to walk back to the St. Hubert’s parking area.
