Ascent Trip ReportWe followed the directions in Bill Jacobs TR of 2003, which still applies today, my purpose here it to update/add a few details.
On the drive up we stopped at the President G.W. Bush's ranch entrance, just east of the Prairie Chapel/Rainey Road corner .... unsigned, solid steel gate (military-like), a house is just to its right (could be security residence).
AREA 1 EAST OF SPROSS LANE ..... 200 yards RT.
There is a fence along the east side of Spross Lane, we parked 200 yards north of Bohne Road. I crawled under the fence at broken spot and walked the harvested corn field 100 yards to the high ground. The few trees with rusted farm equipment and a water well are still there, nothing obvious.
AREA 2, 1ST SPOT WEST OF SPROSS LANE .... .4 miles RT.
There is no fence along the west side of Spross Lane, we parked at .25 miles north of Bohne Road. I walked west 300 yards on the sprouting new grass field to the high ground ... a large flat area of tall fallow grass with clumps of scattered cedar bushes and an animal feeder. Nothing obvious, a Hunters Tower is 100 yards to the south.
AREA 3, MOST NORTHERN WEST OF SPROSS LANE ..... .6 miles RT
We parked on the west side of Spross Lane .5 miles north Bohne Road at a fence corner (to the north is a E-W strip of pasture land with a line of trees). I walked west 500 yards along the south side of the E-W fence line to a N-S fence line (which is or is very-close to the County Line). To the west is higher ground (pasture land) in Coryell County.
I crawled/hopped 2 fences (north & west) in order to check for high ground .... I picking my spot at the N-S fence line, 30 yards north of the E-W fence, GPS 31.57914,-97.59947.
**** NB: not 100% the N-S fence line is the County Line.
I agree with Bill that Area 3 has the highest ground.
