Ascent Trip Report

Used approach described in Zdon's desert peaks book. Drove 3 miles north on Lovell Canyon Rd from Hwy 160, then east on dirt road 5.1 miles to it's end at a small campsite. This is the beginning of the Rainbow Mtn Wilderness. I walked east on a trail, which turned into a wash, for about half a mile where I took a bearing on the highest bump in view to the NE. This bump was probably First Creek Overlook Peak.

I followed washes and ridges to the ridge near the peak where I had an amazing view of both Rainbow Mtn to my left, and Mt. Wilson to my right. I hiked up to the summit of First Creek Overlook Peak where there was a register placed in an ammo box (I had no idea this was a named peak until I found this register, placed only a year before).

From here the route gets interesting. One needs to drop east about 500 ft along a ridge to a saddle, then climb about 600 to the summit of Mt. Wilson. Zdon's guidebook actually says to drop north first from the peak, then make your way back over to the saddle. I found you can just drop east almost directly down the ridge on steep class 3 rock. Some may call it class 4. Anyway, the tough part is about 75 ft down, then becomes class 2. The ridge is a bit brushy in places but becomes easier when starting the final ascent of Mt. Wilson. This peak climb was almost as fun as Bridge Mtn to the north. Great views of Las Vegas, Rainbow Mtn and Potosi Mtn from the summit.

I followed the same route back to First Creek Overlook Peak, then took mostly ridge tops back to the main wash near the trailhead rather than take the smaller washes because the smaller washes were just too full of detritus.
