Ascent Trip ReportWe had wanted to do the 13 mile round trip to Horsepen, Big Bald, and Rich Mountains from the parking area just west of Stanley Gap on Rock Creek Road. However, intermittent rain on our drive up changed our plans. We decided to something shorter. We pulled into the Stanley Gap parking lot in a light rain, waited 10 minutes until it stopped, then proceeded up a very nice trail while dodging 3 mountain bikers (one of whom stopped to give us info on the area). The rain held off the rest of the day. We ascended the trail rather quickly (my daughter can keep a strong pace for long distances) until we reached the spur to the top of Rocky. Had a quick lunch in strong winds, then walked fast/ran slowly back. We detoured off the Stanley Gap trail to take the BMT to Fall Branch Falls where we spent 20 minutes or so. Very scenic and well worth the detour. Had to road walk back to Stanley Gap about 1/2 mile. Total time (including lunch and waterfalls) was 2:25 and distance was about 5.5-6.0 miles. |
