Ascent Trip Report

Part one of the Mopah/Umpah double feature. The trip started badly as I cracked the touchscreen on my Garmin Oregon with my thumb near the start! Fortunately, it kept a track for me, though I was unable to use it during the trip. Anyway, Mopah looks tricky and rather awesome on approach, but in the end is nowhere near as difficult as it might appear. Route from the base has ducks/cairns, then leads to a narrow and steep chute. Beware rockfall in the chute, I found myself wishing I had brought my helmet. Just after this, is the Class 4 section. There were two decent if faded slings at the top with a rap ring on a solid rock horn. Climb is maybe 12' but hangs out over a deep gully/chute, with some decent exposure. The climbing itself isn't difficult, maybe even Class 3. Some of our party downclimbed it during descent, while Austin and I rappelled off the slings, just because we had lugged our gear all the way up and hadn't used it yet! We continued back down to the base then headed off for Umpah. Hiking down the Class 2 to the base is a on loose scree/dirt and a hassle. I took a rare fall and tweaked my wrist a little.
