Ascent Trip ReportDissapointed that most of the BRP was closed for ice and wanting to try out my new snow shoes or last year's crampons, we took the state road that splits Carver Gap from NC - TN border and found the AT parking lot open but very icey. My son, however as it turns out forgot to bring his alpine boots so he could not use his new campons. Great!
It was very cold out 28 degrees F and late in the day so, temperature dropping and all the trails had iced over. We did not have enough microspikes for all so Sarah and Karen took those and Daniel and hoofed it in boots. The trail up this particular segment is easy. Relatively flat class 1 and follows an asphalt paved portion of the AT. It is bald on the top and 5800 feet so excellent views. We all enjoyed this small summit but sun was going to set soon so the ladies encouraged us to bounce over 2 peaks and grab the CHP and they would follow at their own pace.
Sweet! Daniel and took off for Jane and Grassy Bald in a burst. |
