Ascent Trip ReportNice hike in the brisk chill of New Years Eve afternoon. The original plan was to try and finish my ascent of Rocky Mountain from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Since my wife booked a Bed and Breakfast in Lexington for her birthday, I thought this was in the proverbial peak 'bag.' I didn't plan on the Blue Ridge Parkway being closed! Instead, we drove out Route 60 past about two dozen pickup trucks where hunters and their dogs were out trying to shoot some furry animal. We parked at the AT trailhead off 60, amidst a few truck full of hunters. My wife promptly says, "I will be in the truck reading." I don't think she wanted to be mistaken for whatever they were shooting at. I grabbed my GPS (I will post my GPS track when I get home) and started up. Below 3000 feet there wasn't much snow, above 3K there was a thin layer of snow covered ice. Saw one couple with their dog on the same hike, but that was it for other humans. About 2 miles up, 2 thousand feet elevation. I went hard and summitted in about an hour and a fifteen. Took 45 minutes to get down, so a two hour round trip, but I was going pretty hard (I didn't like the look of the sky, thought it might snow). Couldn't find the benchmark under the snow, but the GPS read 4041 pretty consistently on top.
