Ascent Trip ReportFrom Adin on CA 299 I enjoyed the drive to Lookout across the broad, open ranchland of the Big Valley before connecting with County Rd 91. Turn north here and drive about 30 miles to NFR 56 going west. A sign here read---Long Bell Station 16 miles. After 15.5 miles NFR 56 turns right past the Long Bell Guard Station toward Medicine Lake, while the signed lookout road climbs 5.5 miles from here to Round Mountain and its staffed, well maintained L.O. Ron&Donna Bellamy from Alturas have staffed it for the last eight years. Ron was a fund of information about the L.O. and showed me vintage pictures of early Round Mountain staffers. The L.O. was built in 1932, remodeled in 1956 and again in 2001. After a lengthy visit with Ron, I drove back to NFR 56 and followed it to paved NFR 49 about 8 miles south of Medicine Lake.
