Ascent Trip Report

Christmas brought REI gift cards, and for me that meant getting a long-overdue pair of snowshoes. For my first outing I decided to make an attempt at the summit of Bare Mountain, which I have wanted to visit for some time now, before descending snow levels blocked access for me and my sedan.

The N. Fork County Rd is quite different from the Middle fork road as far as scenery goes, but very similar when it comes to potholes. I left renton at 5:30 hoping to make an early start on the trail but it wasn't until 7:45 that I finally reached the extent of my vehicle's capability about 21.5 miles from North Bend, where snow on the road was at least 8" and deep treches had been dug by 4x4s. Oh well, what better way to get used to the snowshoes than a few miles of road walking for a warm up?

I foolishly believed the weather forecast, expecting the precipitation to let up and maybe even provide a few sun breaks around noon. This was not the case and I turned back right after I found what I believe to be the trail, worried that the continued snowfall would make the drive dangerous and difficult.

Does anyone know if there is a parking pull out, or a sign at the trailhead? I found neither of these, but what looked like and old road-turned-trail in about the right spot. Unfortunately the weather prevented my phone from obtaining a GPS location all day.

This trip did not deliver on my overly-optimistic summit hopes, but I was glad to get out with the dog, and I am thoroughly satisfied with my new snowshoes. I also enjoyed watching some small avalanches on the north face of the NW ridge of Goat Mountain.
