Ascent Trip ReportWith 6-8" of fresh snow from yesterday, I decided today would be a good opportunity to test the winter gear for the first time this season. We snowshoed Shannon's Trail up Crotched Mountain, starting near the Rehabilitation Center on Crotched Mountain Road.
We broke trail through unpacked powder, taking turns leading. Early on in the ascent, the trail passes through some open meadows, but the route-finding wasn't difficult, even with the snowcover. There were a few small cairns marking the route, and we generally headed due north.
The trail then entered the woods, making one fairly easy stream crossing. After a while, the real climbing began, and frequent yellow blazes marked the route along this section of trail ... otherwise staying on course through the snow may have been difficult at times. We paused at a couple of vistas, taking in the view south toward Mt. Monadnock. We enjoyed bright sunshine, with partially cloud-covered deep blue sky.
Once we reached the Upper Link Trail, we saw other footprints for the first time. Someone had come up that way a little earlier, hiking without snowshoes. The snow wasn't deep enough in most places for severe postholing, but flotation help was preferable today. From there, it was just a few more minutes to the summit, which, as noted in previous logs, is rather unattractive. We next backtracked to our starting point and headed out, leaving behind a broken-out trail for the next hikers.
