Ascent of Greenwood County High Point on 2012-12-23
|Date:||Sunday, December 23, 2012|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
|Peak:||Greenwood County High Point|
| Location:||USA-South Carolina|
| Elevation:||730 ft / 222 m|
Ascent Trip ReportThe sprawling Clendenin Lumber mill has obliterated two of the four 730-foot contours. According to the satellite photos, it appears that one is under the main building and the other in a storage area. No doubt, both have been leveled. The lumber yard is gated and posted--visitors allowed on weekdays, but I was here on a Sunday. It might be an interesting place to visit, but don't expect to discern a natural contour among the muddy ruts and mounds of sawdust.
The other two areas along the power lines are easy walks from Cal Robinson Drive. Be careful during hunting season--there is a deerstand atop the southeastern point (Area 4 on cohp.org). My vote is for the other hill nearer the houses (cohp Area 3), where the fenced dogs still howl.
My 113th COHP and 13th in SC.
