Ascent Trip Report

You can drive to the top, and if you're nimble and brave you can try to climb the 80-foot fire tower. The treads and railings have been removed from the first flight of stairs, but the remaining brackets are enough to give you a foothold. Potentially great views of the Black Mtn range from up there. BM (Spruce Pine 1960, set by the NC State Highway Commission) is centered under the tower.

Exit the Blue Ridge Parkway at Little Switzerland (NC 226A), take Chestnut Grove Road under the parkway, zigzag R and then L around Chestnut Grove church, and continue to the unpaved Fire Tower Road on the R.

The nearby McKinney Mine is worth a visit.
