Ascent Trip Report

My hiking buddy and I got to the pull-off area on NH 124 near the Windblown Ski Center at about 8:15 AM. We geared up and, after looking for where the Wapack Trail northbound was, started.

The Kidder Mountain section of the Wapack Trail started off by following a dirt road and then quickly veered onto a regular trail. It went up, then down, and then turned left, passing close by a house and under an uphill line (probably a old ski line). The trail then resumed its normal style.

We passed through some muddy areas and old roads and then met some power lines after turning sharp left. The blue-blazed trail to Kidder Mountain diverged right from the main trail, and we followed it.

The Kidder Mountain Trail went under power lines for a short distance and then veered into the woods. It started a relatively easy ascent toward the summit, and the climb would be easy all the way to the top. We passed by and through some clear areas, one of which contained a hunter.

The trail, which intertwined with a dirt road, emerged onto a grassy clearing and turned right to the summit. Straight ahead, there was a small tower, which I assume the dirt road serviced. The trail then made a left upward curve to the summit, which was covered in stone walls and cairns. Summit time: 9:00 AM.

The view from Kidder's summit was vast and included the southern Wapack Range, Mount Wachusett, and Boston. We hung out at the summit for a few minutes and then went back down to the Wapack Trail and walked it for a short distance northward, eventually turning back and heading back to my truck at NH 124.
