Ascent Trip Report

A drive up to an outstanding panorama of Istanbul.

Rose and I came to Istanbul to celebrate my 75th birthday ...... no better way to spend the day than a trip to a mountain top. So we purchased a tour package which included a visit with lunch on Camlica Hill (which is not in PB Library but I will add it as a provisional peak) ..... advertised by the tourist literature as the highest hill in Istanbul.
Based on a preliminary check I would later find out that perhaps this information is incorrect. Since 2004 the City and the Province share the same boundaries and name of Istanbul, a mountain 20km southeast of Camlica Hill has a 520 meter contour, much higher than Camlica.
Camlica I believe is the highest hill in the "immediate vicinity of Bosphorus Strait and the old city of Instanbul" but not in the City/Province of Instanbul.

Unfortunately the weather wasn't very cooperative, drizzle and fog, so the bus took the group to the restaurant just below the summit, with no intention of going to the top because of the weather. This of course wasn't acceptable to a Peakbagger, so with Rose's umbrella I rushed to the summit at few hundred meters away while the group went into the restaurant, I was back in less than 20 minutes.

The actual summit area is capped with pine trees, restaurant, stone walkways and benches in a park-like setting. The panorama of the City with it's impressive Bosphorus Strait is simply outstanding and very popular with the locals ..... I was told that wedding parties come up here for their photos.
The rest of the ridge, to the north and to the south of the High Point is full of pine groves with Communication Towers, too many to count.

I was told that the government has plans to build a mosque on this summit, the great majority of people are apparently against this project.

We spent a super enjoyable day in spite of the weather, Camlica must be on all Peakbagger's agenda when in Istanbul.

LYRICS FROM THE SONG.... Istanbul (not Constantinople)

Istanbul was Constantinople
now its Istanbul
not Constantinople

Been a long time gone
old Constantinople still has
Turkish delight
on a moonlight night

Every gal in Constantinople
lives in Istanbul, not

So if you've a date in
she'll be waiting in Istanbul

Even old New York
was once New Amsterdam

Why they changed it
I can't say
People just like it better
that way

Take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back
to Constantinople

Now its Istanbul
not Constantinople
Why did Constantinople
get the works?

That's nobody's business
but the Turks.
