Ascent Trip ReportI had the whole day off, so I spent the day hiking like I spend most of my days off. After debating with myself as to where to hike, I decided to head to the Belknap Mountain area. Belknap Mtn was the original plan, but the gate was closed, so I chose Gunstock Mtn instead.
I took the Gunstock Mountain Trail, which started a short distance past the gate on the left side of the road, to the summit. It was blazed with white rectangles.
The trail went over a wooden board and then turned right and steadily ascended through nice woods. It passed through a gap in a stone wall, and the grade varied from moderate to steep all the way to the summit.
It went over rocky ledges in spots, and was covered in a film of leaves, which made footing difficult, especially on the descent. The trail passed by a false path and later a side path, and then climbed steadily to the summit. The last dozen or so feet of vertical gain were snowy and slick.
After reaching a big shack, I passed to the right of it and emerged onto the summit, which was covered in a few inches of snow. The ski lifts were going, and skiers came up shortly before I left the summit. There were views toward the White Mountains and Mount Washington off the slopes. I sat on a pipe and had something to eat and drink, and then headed back down just as the skiers started to show. Belknap Range peak #4 done!
