Ascent Trip ReportCOHP.ORG gives 2 Candidate High Point Areas, we visited them both in the order listed below. My source of information for the directions was Michael Schwartz's TR of 2000.
AREA 1 (Chestnut Ridge as per PB and located north of Shawville) ..... a dirt road walk of 400 yards RT.
From I80,exit 120, we drove east on hwy#879 to its intersection with Hwy #970 at the bridge in Shawville, we continued east for .87 miles to a left turn on Knobs Road. We zeroed our odo.
0.00M -- left hwy #879 northbound on Knobs Road.
3.23M -- crossed Trout Run Road, a left turn here will take one back to Shawville, we continued straight.
7.58M -- turned left (west) on Chestnut Ridge Road, unsigned.
8.51M -- arrived at gated dirt road on right at a height-of-land. The gate was tied closed with a bungee cord.
A small yellow sign on the gate by the Pennsylvania State Forestry Dept. read "This land is is fenced-in with tall fences to prevent animals (deer) from entering because of the recent seedling restoration project. Once the growth has been established the fence will be removed."
I opened the gate and walked the dirt road 200 yards to the summit ....capped with a fenced-in Communication Tower, tall woods to one side, somewhat open summit with limited views. I chose my HP west of the Tower at 25 yards next to an inverted dished-cone, GPS 41.16368,-78.35603.
AREA 2 (a good distance west of Shawville) ...... .9 miles, 50 minutes RT.
From Area 1 we backtracked to I80 and drove west to the next exit #111, where we drove south on hwy#153 to a right turn on hwy #322 towards Rockton, 2.61 miles (west) turned left on Greenwood Road with Rockton Mountain Trails Kiosk/Parking Area on the corner, .8 miles (south) parked at the gated grass road to the left (topo calls it Bloom Road). This was my TH, the HP is southeast.
I walked the grass road east 150 yards to a grass road on the right (just after the sign "State Forest Land") which generally heads southeast directly to the summit at approx 500 yards (from Bloom Road), went around a second gate at 200 yards. *** I actually found this route on my descend, as I started my ascend further to the east and had to bushwack through some nasty/dense stuff.
The road arrives at the fenced-in Communication Tower. The huge flat summit contour is covered with extremely dense/head-high scrub-bushes, mostly Mountain Laurel, and to find high ground in this mess is no fun. I tramped/fought-my-way-around before deciding on a spot 100 yards east of the Tower near a few pink tapes and calling it good .... no guarantee that I found "the" HP. My GPS 41.06429,-78.56831.
