Ascent Trip ReportFinally rehiking this mountain that my father first introduced me to back in the late 1970s. I thought of him as I left at 6:35 AM beginning the hike before sunrise. It was cold and wet. The potholes of granite were filled with water from the rain the night before and the slick granite was slippery. I found the Cherokee side trails and investigated them and think they would be a much better way up from the one way road parking off of Gen Lee Blvd. That is a real trail. This standard path is like a granite freeway called the "Walk Up Trail"
Fortutanley I had the entire granitic pluton to myself as it was too early and cold for others. At the top the fog was so thick I could not even see the tram towers and building at the top until I was literally 50 feet away. I was down by 7:30 AM down and off to my wetland site.
Later that day after doing my weltand work, I played on the other nearby igneous plugs (Bradely and Arabia) and then returned and climbed this batholith one more time quickly before sunset.
The second time I started at 5:07 PM and was down by 5:45 PM (38 minutes) including time for photos at the top and talking to a few people. I passed 40 or 50 people on the way up - it was a total contrast to early this morning - a hightway of hikers!! I had a conference call from work that I had to participate in and I actually conducted a conference call and climb the rock in 20 minutes.
Someday I will try the Cherokee Trail.
