Ascent Trip Report

Two weeks after Superstorm Sandy, the Fire Tower Road was in rough shape--gravel washed out, sharp rocks lurking in the leaves, and mudholes that looked like they could swallow an Accord. Someone with a chainsaw had blazed a way through the blown-down trees, but there were still lots of branches clawing at my fenders.

I was able to drive up, thanks to high clearance and 4WD. On a good day, it might be possible in a car, though I wouldn't recommend it. If you park at the end of the pavement, the hike to the summit would be 2.3 miles.

Satellite photos show a second road to the summit up the south side from Bethany Baptist Church. I saw the top of this road, and it looked no better. Plus, I think it may be gated at the bottom.

Nice views from the summit if you can ignore the guy-wires.

My 110th COHP and 32nd in Virginia.
