Ascent Trip ReportThis was a spectacular ridge walk from the Kranskop radio towers parking area. There is no trail or manway, but the direction is obviously west. The terrain is very rocky with tall grasses the whole way. It is said this is on private property, but there is no development or fences. It's worth it since here is where you experience the true greatness of the Waterberg/Sandrivierberg at its highest. It was like an island in the sky. The high point is obvious, with a cement pillar which, when the metal rod was still attached, is a lightning rod to prevent wild fires, common on peaks in the region. We took our time going up with lots of pictures and sitting. The 1:15 hr:min return was a constant pace.
On this traverse the Cape Vultures flew right over head, and you could see their circling near the cliffs very well. We also saw five klipspringers run by us near the peak, tons of wildflowers and Fabaceae, a puff adder, Podocarpus latifolius (Real Yellowood) in slot canyons, and Gurney's Sugarbird among the protea.
