Ascent Trip ReportAt York Pond trail's junction with Kilkenny Ridge trail, finding my bearings was a bit tricky. The footing was lost amid leaves and grass, and most blazes were long gone. I eventually found the sign and followed a faint trail to another sign that read how York Pond trail is no longer maintained.
I find it deplorable that it is not explicitly stated on the trail how access to private land further down is prohibited. Some people might come unprepared and head downhill in ignorance...
I took a right to follow Kilkenny Ridge trail again and soon started ascending along an easy grade. Birches were still dominant and it showed through the absence of any roots characteristic of conifer forests along the trail. It wound around the imposing southeastern face of Terrace Mt. and, soon after passing it, steepened into several switchbacks. At the top of this section, I reached the mountain's plateau and the junction to the summit spur.
I dropped my pack there and left with GPS and camera in hand for a short stroll towards my goal. I reached the true high point around 14:35, took some pictures, and returned to my pack. I was getting substantially tired now and dreaded the downhill that lay ahead of me before I reached Mt. Cabot for the pain my knees would cause me.
I took it easy from here on and was soon at the low point on the ridge before middle Terrace Mt.
