Ascent Trip Report

Parked behind cottages and farm buildings on the opposite side of the D.407 from the access track. Walked in along a field edge towards woodland edged with shooting butts. Woodland track began to climb and become overgrown, but was heading in right direction. Came across feeding station for wild game birds. This seemed to be accessed by vehicle coming in opposite direction to our route. Still climbing and following left bend in track. Then it seemed we needed to cut into the wood. A prolonged search failed to unearth the familiar marking block. We felt certain we had crossed and recrossed the high point, but it is disconcerting to be left with a niggling doubt. We decided to call it a day and return to the track, relying on our GPS reading and that no ground seemed higher than where we had been. Then we found a concrete cube! If it was the marker it had been displaced by ploughing/planting etc. as it was clearly lying in a lower position than our sortie into the woodland had taken us..
