Ascent Trip Report

Wife and I drove in from Dallas early that morning. I really wanted my first high point to be as true a high point as possible, so after a little research I decided to take off from cove lake at the foot of the mountain. We arrived at Cove Lake around 11. Hiked from cove lake across road and began the 11 (couldve swore the sign said twelve) mile hike to the top of Mt Magazine. Took the first few miles rather slow taking in the sights of beautiful Arkansas, til we realized we still had around 8 miles to go and it was way past midday. So we picked up our pace and trudged on. We reached the top around 3 or 4 oclock. Realizing we wouldnt have a lot of daylight left we decided to check into alternative modes of descent. Luckily the awesome staff at the lodge gave us a ride to the lake as they were going into town.

tips for success: if youre taking the cove lake trail hit it hard and hit it early haha. Bring bug spray we encountered some very annoying gnats around mile four and they stayed with us til around mile ten. Stop by the lodge the staff is friendly and the view is fantastic!
