Ascent Trip Report

This is the southernmost peak on the Iron Mountain Trail, which was the original route for the AT before it was rerouted over Mount Rogers in 1972. Good information on the Iron Mountain Trail can be found at

To reach the southern terminus, take TN 91 from Elizabethton or Shady Valley to the Cross Mountain Gap, where there is an AT trailhead. Turn SE on the Cross Mountain Road and go 1.4 miles past a small gated development that is negatively signed. As the road begins to descend and passes under power wires, park on the left and look for a brown stake marked as the Iron Mtn trailhead. Climb this hill and enter the woods, where the trail follows an old roadway along the ridgetop, crossing Point 4040 after 0.75 miles. There might be good views to the south and east, but all I saw was fog.

Round trip 1.5 miles from the road to Point 4040.
