Ascent Trip ReportHedgehog sustained a lot of storm damage as a result of the remnants of Irene blowing through in late August. As a result the east side of the UNH trail loop has been diverted onto a new section of trail. Despite being just a few weeks old it's already well broken in and easy to follow. There are plenty of signs advising about the new trail as well, so you're not going to get lost. Starting after you turn off old railroad grade you'll start to come across the clear cut sections on your left. I did the loop west to east, because I wasn't familiar with the new trail and wanted to follow it down instead of up. The side path to Allen's ledge is worth the quick diversion. Excellent view of the valley, Chocoroua, and even Washington on a clear day. The trail up to the ledge is very heavily eroded and was a little tricky to come back down. Don't catch a toe on a root, it's quite steep. The weather was perfect so the peak was quite crowded. I found a quiet overlook just off the main peak to rest. Coming off the back side of the peak and working around east offered some outstanding view. The east ledges about 1/3 of the way down were just outstanding. We spent a lot of time picking our way down on the ledges and enjoying the view. After this the trail go wet and slippery in places. Watch out for this if it's rained recently. It's very shaded in this area and I imagine it doesn't dry out very quickly at all. This was just an outstanding hike. Not terrible demanding and simply amazing view points all along the way.
