Ascent Trip Report

I wanted to bag an easy to moderate peak on my way back to the Bay Area from Lassen national Park so I found Bloomer Hill just outside of Oro. This hill was also a good choice because it is on the County Prominence High Point list as well. From googlle maps it looked like there were plenty of streets around so i was hoping to have an easy time finding parking.

I took the Oroville-Quincy Highway north to Encina Grande Road. I actually missed Encina Grande on the way out because it's a dirt road. I turned around and found it and headed up Encina Grande. The road wasn't impassible, but far from ideal in my Ford Mustang. When the road intersected with He Le Ve Road I decided enough was enough so I found room for parking and left my car there.

To start I mistakenly went down Wagon Wheel Way only to figure out it was the wrong way and headed back up to my car. Except for this little bit, the route I took was an out and back.

The entire way up was a dirt road. There was some scenary over Lake Oroville. I was all alone until a dog started charging me from higher up on the road. He wasn't happy until after he got to me and smelled around a little, and then the owner came lumbering down the hill telling me the dog was friendly. The dog suddenly became friendly so i chatted with the owner briefly and we continued on our ways.

Just as I got to the top I saw a rattlesnake across the trail. I almost stepped on it, but noticed it just in time. it had eaten somethign recently because its belly was bloated and it had slight difficulty moving across the trail to get away from me.

The top was very unspectacular but there was a metal fire tower that was quite high. I decided to climb it but after going up 3 flights of stairs (out of at least 10) I changed my mind. The more I looked, the more I decided it was too rickety looking for me. I'm sure it is fine so I should probably go back there sometime to climb it because the viewis probably really good.

The way down was uneventful. I caught up to the dog and his guy again and showed him my minute long video ofthe rattlesnake. I knew when I was getting close to my car when I heard the chickens at the house next to where I parked.
