Ascent Trip ReportA norhbound trail hike and 2 bushwhacks ...... 5.5 miles, 6h00 hours RT for both peaks including all breaks.
I did this climb together-with the near-by Peak 2012. From North Lovell I took West Stoneham Road as it winds its way northerly for 1.7 miles to a right on Hut Road, then north 1.5 miles to the signed Miles Notch TH Parking (last .2 miles its a narrow road).
I left the TH northeast and in 150 yards came to a trail junction, Yellow Arrow sign with hand written "State Trail" points to the right, straight ahead (left) is an unblazed trail, sign "No ATVS". "Stupid is stupid does" I confidently went right, realizing I screwed-up an hour later, so I backtracked and this time I stayed left.
The trail climbs moderately northeast over a ridge, then drops 400 feet to the valley floor before climbing northerly to Miles Notch at about 2.2 miles (2h25 hours). The last part of the final climb is pretty rough and it seemed to go on forever .... I found it very hard, I huffed and puffed with numerous granny breaks. The old ticker is not what it used-to-be. The Notch is a pretty wild/rough place with an impressive vertical rock wall forming the west side (east face of Miles Knob). At a nice/open flat in the Notch I took a long/well-deserved snack break, before starting my wacks, GPS read 44.30170,-70.88145.
EAST MILES NOTCH ..... .2 miles, 25 minutes RT. I left the Notch and bushwhacked east (somewhat dense in places, not difficult) 150 yards to the summit area, wooded with no views. I chose my spot at GPS 44.30226,070.87994 and hung a Canister with a small register on a tree. I now have 2 only outstanding peaks, both in PA, in my PB List "Northeast Triple Divide Points".
I returned to the Notch and continued to Peak 2012, see its TR for the details. I descended back to the TH from the notch in 1h25.
