Ascent Trip Report

Green Mountain is the second highest peak in Wilkes County and barely misses being a twofer with the Alleghany County line running just NW of the summit.

Park at the Air Bellows Overlook (Parkway MP 237) and walk northbound about 100 yards to the Mountain-to-Sea Trail trail crossing on the L. Follow the MST into the woods. The topo shows a trail crossing the summit, but the MST does not go there. The designers of the MST were not compulsive peakbaggers, and in this part of the state, the MST contours around peaks instead of crossing them.

Leave the MST after about 100 yards and follow the spine of the ridge upwards. Soon you'll find remnants of the old path that bypasses a house on the L and then leads to a gravel road that reaches the fenced communications tower on the summit. The houses on the summit are part of a gated community, but the ridge is a NPS boundary, so access for hikers shouldn't be a problem.

Round trip 0.9 miles.
