Ascent Trip ReportAt Buckhorn Summit (3,213')25 miles west of Redding on CA 299 turn south on the county-maintained East County Line Rd/Bully Choop Rd, which connects CA 299 and the Platina Rd. Stay on this good dirt road for 12+ miles to a broad saddle, where Bully Choop Mountain and its Calfire L.O. are in full view. Take the spur road to Bully Choop, passing a gate in about 1 mile and arriving at the summit in less than a mile beyond the gate, which is locked when the L.O. is not staffed. Despite the haze there were good views of Mt. Shasta, Lassen Peak, Anthony Peak, North Yolla Bolly, Black Butte, and Thompson Peak in the Trinity Alps. I enjoyed my conversation with L.O. veteran (22 years) Vicki Lamoureux, who was full of interesting information. I returned the way I came, rather than continuing south to Platina.
