Ascent Trip Report

`My hike to Peep Sight Peak began at the upper end of Pacific Valley Campground (7,550'), the turnoff for which is 1 mile NE of Pacific Grade Summit (8,050') on CA 4. The good dirt road is blocked where I parked and is closed beyond to vehicular traffic. It parallels the Pacific Valley for 1.5 miles to the "real" TH, where I took the Milk Ranch Tr crossing Pacific Creek, then ascending Marshall Canyon before turning south to climb a low saddle. A short walk through an attractive meadow leads to the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness boundary and the junction with the Weiser Tr. I continued on the Milk Ranch Tr,, soon leaving the forest and entering open space with the first views of Peep Sight Peak. The Peep Sight is an isolated window of rock about 40' across and 25' high. standing as a natural bridge near the main ridge. I followed the trail about another 1/2 mile to a flat area and its high point east of the peak, which is the highest formation at the north end of the N-S ridge. The peak is plainly visible, about 600' up steep slopes of broken but fairly firm rock. Only the last few feet at the top involve some Class 2 terrain. No register. A pleasant, uneventful return after a highly rewarding day in the wilderness.
