Ascent Trip ReportFrom north of Siskiyou Pass on I-5, take the Mt. Ashland exit and follow the road past the Mt. Ashland ski area (9.4 miles) and on well signed FSR 20 to Siskiyou Gap, Wrangle Gap, and finally to Jackson Gap (22.6 miles from I-5). A dirt spur road accesses Dutchman Peak L.O. in 1.3 miles. This is a picturesque, cupola-style L.O. which has been staffed continuously since 1927. The final vehicle approach was punched in from Jackson Gap in 1933. The L.O. with its wilderness views offers a real sense of isolation as well as elevation, with several canyons falling steeply nearby. Well worth the visit. I enjoyed chatting with John McKelligott, an enthusiastic, well informed relief staffer who has been a champion of this place for many years.
