Ascent Trip ReportPacheco State Park is located on the south side of CA 152 west of Pacheco Pass (1,368'). It is approached from Dinosaur Point Rd, about 24 miles east of Gilroy. The surrounding land, including the San Luis Reservoir, was part of a 48,000-acre Mexican land grant to Juan Perez Pacheco in 1848. My Spikes Peak loop was about 6 miles in length with a net elevation gain of about 500 feet and, counting undulations, a gross gain of 800-900 feet. The Spikes Peak Tr(an old dirt road) climbs past the Pig Pond Tr and three signed east-west trails: Tunnel Monument Tr, Up and Over Tr, and Spring Ridge Tr. Spikes Peak is 2.5 miles from the TH; the open grassy summit knoll is just off the trail. I returned to the TH via the South Boundary Loop Tr, Canyon Loop Tr, Pig Pond Tr, and finally the Spikes Peak Tr.
