Ascent Trip Report

A trail/bushwhack to 5 Areas ...... 10km, 3h50 hours RT.

Lions Head Provincial Park, one of the many protected areas along the Bruce Peninsula and located on the rugged shoreline of Georgian Bay, is part of the Niagara Escarpment Parks System, and the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve. One of the more spectacular areas on the Bruce Peninsula, this nature-reserve-class/non-operating park is without visitors facilities. The Bruce Trail passes through the area - best suited for hiking and nature appreciation.

The high ground is at the north end of the park. Peakbagger gives 3 Candidate High Point Areas, I visited all 3 of them, however the actual ground terrain throughout this area is not as neat/easy as shown on the Topo Maps. This is very rough rocky terrain with numerous bumps all over the place and very difficult to find High Points. I spent a lot of time in the area and I came up with 5 Candidates and by no means all High Points. Needs someone better than I to do that. My new eye-level is not at all reliable ..... I am going to bring it back for a refund.
I have numbered/listed the Areas in the order visited.

Fortunately the area is all very open deciduous (beach, maple) forest with very little under growth, making it easy to look for high ground. The footing is another matter, very rocky with some dead-fall.

From the village of Lions Head, intersection of Main Street and Moore Road at the Lions Head United Church, we traveled north on Moore Road for 1.1km to the Bruce Trail Parking on the right. This was my TH.

11h40 (0km) I left the TH northbound on Moore Road.
11h45 (.4km) right (north) on blue blazed Moore Side Trail to northbound on the Bruce main trail (white blazes).
12h18 (2.8km) I arrived at the Inland Side Trail, took in the outstanding lookout of the Isthumus Bay before leaving eastbound on Inland Side Trail.
12h45 (3.9km) I arrived at Junction of Inland Side Trail/McKay Harbour Trail, my GPS read 45.00135,-81.21978. I call this Junction "POINT X".

AREA 1 (PB's contour 3)
From "POINT X" I continued east on the Inland Trail (after wrongly taking an unmarked/larger trail to the right and having to come back) for .4km to a right (signed) on a dead-end trail that leads south 100M to the 45 degree Geodetic BM.
13h05 (4.4km) - arrived at 45 DEGREE PARALLEL BENCHMARK ..... embedded in a concrete pier "Geodetic Survey of Canada, 34301", my GPS 45.00024,-81.21536.

AREA 2 (PB's contour 2)
From the 45 degree BM I went back to the Inland Side Trail and walked west 140M to a huge uprooted tree across the trail. In front of me to the south was high ground in all open woods with no/little underbrush. It was easy to see the high ground.
13h25 (4.7km) ... I walked the area and chose my spot at an obvious bump, 60M south of the trail, GPS 45.00058,-81.21678. I built a cairn and added orange tape.

AREA 3
From Area 2 I bushwacked west 200M on very rough terrain to a second rough bump (with somewhat of gully in between). Nothing obvious.
13h50 (5.0km) .... I chose my spot at a large tree about 75M south of Inland Side Trail, built cairn, added orange tape, GPS 45.00115,-81.21861.

AREA 4
From Area 3 I went back to "POINT X" then bushwacked/searched southeast 300M at a large area with nothing obvious, chose a spot at GPS 44.99987,-81.21763, added tape ....14h15 (5.3km).

AREA 5 (PB's main candidate)
From Area 4 I went back to "POINT X" and bushwacked/searched southerly at 150M settling on a rock outcrop with a tree on top. GPS 45.00027,-81.21954 .... 14h40(5.8km).

I went back to "POINT X", then backtracked to the TH ..... 15h30 (10km).
From here we moved up the Bruce Peninsula to a campground south of Tobermory.
