Ascent Trip ReportApprox. 15 miles north of Somes Bar a signed road turns east to Ukonom Mountain and its L.O. The route starts on Ti-Bar Rd (FSR 12N11), then FSR 14N01 after 3.8 miles. At 5.4 miles from CA 96 the paved road ends and the dirt road continues 4.0 miles to the summit L.O. on FSR 13N08. From the saddle (1.8 miles) the road narrows, climbing steeply in spots into the open , finishing via the shelf road that ends abruptly at the concrete-block L.O. Parking is limited. The L.O. is usually staffed during fire season, but the Panther Fire, which started with the widespread lightning storms on June 21 and burned 26,000 acres, prompted its closure. The extensive burn to the east was evident in the northern end of the Marble Mountains. I met a firefighter (from Camino, CA) parked next to the L.O. standing watch in case of flare-ups.
