Ascent Trip Report

Alder Springs Rd is the NF connector (F7) for CA 162 between Alder Springs and Covelo via Mendocino Pass and the Eel River Guard Station. Driving from the west, follow CA 162 and F7 to the end of the paved section; turn south and uphill on the unsigned washboard road 1.7 miles to meet M3 at a major intersection. Head south on M3, ignoring various intersections and spur roads, to an unsigned, gated dirt road on the west side approx. 0.5 mile before the 17.5-mile distance marker on the shoulder of M3. (M3 continues approx. 4 miles downhill past the 17.5-mile marker to Low Gap, a major intersection on the edge of the Snow Mountain Wilderness. M3 continues for 40 miles to Clear Lake; FSR 18N02 descends to Stonyford--23 miles.) From the gate, the good spur rises 500'+ with several long, easy-grade switchbacks through the forest to the large bare knoll at the top of Sheetiron Mountain. A USGS BM reading "Sheetiron-1932" and the concrete foundation are the only remnants of the former L.O. The true summit of Sheetiron Mountain is a small nearby rocky outcrop. There is a brilliantly gold-colored USGS marker here which provides no useful information,
