Ascent Trip ReportLeaving U. S. 101 at Garberville, I drove the Alderpoint Rd to Alderpoint, then connected across the Eel River with the Zenia Rd, climbing 2,500' to the small community of Zenia. From here I followed the Zenia-Ruth Rd for 2.7 miles, then turned left on FSR 2S08, continuing past Watts Lake Campground to FSR 1S07, which veers right towards the Lassics area. Within short distances of the road are three Lassics: Black Lassic, Red Lassic, and Signal Peak (aka Mt. Lassic). After hiking Black Lassic, I drove back up FSR 1S07 about half a mile to the trailhead for Signal Peak, A good, well signed trail (6E31) leads west in 1+ miles to Signal Peak, the site of a former L.O. It was first surveyed in 1881 and became known as the "Mt. Lassic BM." A concrete column from 1928 remains, and a USGS BM is placed near the summit. Again, as on Black Lassic, Richard Carey and Gail Hanna left a register book in a glass jar covered by a red can in 2005. Great wilderness views. Back to the 4Runner, then 7.5 miles and 3,000' down to Van Duzen Rd, which I followed along the Van Duzen River Rd.to Mad River and CA 36.
