Ascent Trip ReportFrom the Salt Creek exit on I-5 take paved Gilman Rd 4.5 miles to the signed dirt road (FSR 35N04) to Hirz Mountain L.O. After 1.4 miles on this road a sign discourages 2WD vehicles. The road is reasonably good with a few rough spots, steep in a couple of places, but 4WD not required. After 4 miles the road reaches the ridgetop saddle, then ends the final mile as a narrow, single track to arrive at a turnaround and locked gate about 1/4 mile below Hirz Mountain. The road climbs steeply to the open summit and Hirz Mountain L.O. A commanding view down to the McClouid River arm of Lake Shasta. The original L.O. was rebuilt by the CCC in 1937 with a 12'x12' ground-level cab. In 1949 it was replaced with the present 20' steel tower and 14'x14' live-in cab. After being abandoned in the 1980s, it was renovated and is now available for rent.
