Ascent Trip ReportRoute A: From West Point on CA 26 go south on Railroad Flat Rd through Wilseyville and take Blue Mountain Rd. past Schaad Rd (3.3 miles) and FSR 6N56Y (7.7 miles) to signed FSR 6N04 (10.9 miles) on the right. This road, which is locked and gated, leads through Sierra Pacific land to Blue Mountain and Blue Mountain L.O. (3.8 miles). I was able to avoid 7.5 miles of hiking when by chance I happened to meet a Forest Service employee who was opening the gate just as I arrived and whose truck I followed to the L.O.and back out. He was there to help the lookout person close it for the season. The short L.O. was built in the mid-1960s, replacing a wooden one from the 1930s. Its base is enclosed, and the cab is entered by inside stairs from below. Good views.
Route B: From the Chevron station at the north end of Arnold on CA 4, turn west and follow the road--FSR 7N08-- past White Pines Lake 12.8 miles to FSR 6N04 on the left, which leads to Blue Mountain. (It wasn't until I had gone 6.9 miles from CA 4 that I saw a sign identifying the road as FSR 7N08.)
