Ascent Trip ReportFrom the Upper Lake Ranger District office at Upper Lake drive up Elk Mountain Rd. 0.6 miles to Pitney Lane, turn right and follow it for 0.8 mile to FSR 16N30, where a sign reads "8 miles" to the High Glade L.O. The road winds up Sam Alley Ridge and after 7.8 miles (by my odometer) meets a spur road ending at the L.O. in another 1.2 miles. Though relatively low in elevation, a very fine panorama view greets the visitor: Mt. Sanhedrin, Hull Mountain,Anthony Peak, Snow Mountain, Goat Mountain, Mt. Konocti, Cobb Mountain, Cow Mountain, Mt. St. Helena and Clear Lake. The L.O. was built in the 1930s and nearly destroyed in the "Fork fire" in 1996. The USGS benchmark, embedded in a cement block which holds the pole for a proudly flying American flag, dates from 1949.
