Ascent Trip ReportI took Harris Rd off CA 49 to the small community of Ponderosa Basin, then drove a short distance via the Harris Cutoff to Chowchilla Mountain Rd, then to FSR 4S04, then NW on it 3.6 miles to Crowfoot Junction. From here it was straight ahead 1.5 miles on FSR 4S31 to the locked gate about 1/3 mile from the top. (The gate is open when the L.O. is staffed.) Devil Peak is the HP of Chowchilla Mountain. The fire lookout is known as Signal Peak L.O. The view from this prominent spot covers a broad area of lower, minor peaks separated by several steep canyons. On the return I followed Chowchilla Mountain Rd and followed it 5 miles past the Summit campground and down to meet CA 41 just opposite the Wawona Hotel.
