Ascent Trip Report

This was a SPS sponsored trip led by Doug Mantle and Barbara Cohen to climb Petit Peak, Piute Mountain and Volunteer Peak. On day one, our group backpacked from Twin Lakes up the Barney Lake trail past Peeler Lake and over Seavey Pass to our camp at Benson Lake, which was about 19 miles. On day two, we climbed Piute Mountain from Benson Lake, which was class 2. On day three, our group day hiked south on the PCT and then south on the Rodger Lake trail to about 9,600' in elevation, then climbed Volunteer Peak via its class 2 south ridge. Later, we dropped down the south ridge of Volunteer Peak to about 10,000' in elevation, then followed a circuitous class 2 route to the top of Pettit Peak via its north ridge. Afterwards, we returned to our camp at Benson Lake via Rodgers Lake and the PCT. On the forth day, we backpacked out to the vehicles. Please see my 07-20-1996 Volunteer Peak trip report for trip stats and trip details.
